Using Images
Images in your content are a fantastic way of adding life to your site and really engaging a user’s attention.
In this guide, we’re going to show you:
- How to add regular images to your articles.
- How to set “thumbnails” for articles which will then be used across the site (including the homepage).
Images in Articles
We start off by editing a post as normal (Either via Posts > Add New, or Posts > Edit). Now follow these steps to add an image:
- Click in the post, wherever you would like the image to be inserted at.
- Now click the first icon next to where it say s “Upload/Insert” above your post editor.

- Click the “Select Files” button to find the images on your computer (Or alternatively, click the URL tab if the image is already online).
- When the image has finished uploading, wait another second or two and you will see an information window about the image. Here, you can set various descriptions and settings for the image. Here is a run-down of what each option does:
Title – The text that appears if the user hovers their mouse over the image for a few seconds.
Alternate Text – Displayed when the image fails to load for any reason, or to users who have images disabled (E.g. screen-readers). This text can also be useful for SEO purposes.
Caption - If you enter a description of the photo here, it will appear beneath the photo in your post (usually with a decorative border/background around the two). Unless you specifically want a caption, just leave this blank!
Description – The description section isn’t used in your post, so feel free to ignore it!
Link URL – If the user clicks on the image, should they be taken somewhere else? The File URL option is a good idea if you have uploaded a large image and are using one of the size settings (More on that in a minute!) to resize it. Most of the time though, you’ll probably want to leave this blank!
Alignment – This allows you to see what section of the page you would like your image in, e.g. if you want the image to be aligned to the right (so that the text flows past it on the left), you would choose “Right.” If your image is the full width of your post area though, then just leave this on “None.”
Size - WordPress can automatically resize your image for you, or choose “Full Size” to stay with the exact size you uploaded. You can adjust the sizes used under Settings > Media. A good idea is to set the Large option to the width of your post area, and the Medium option to half that width (just post in the support forum if you need help working out those widths!). If you don’t want the images to be resized height-wise, just set the Max Height value to a high number (e.g. 9999). You should usually just leave the thumbnail size as it is.
- When you’re finished adjusting the descriptions, click the Insert into Post button and you’re done!

Thumbnails for Your Homepage
Any of our themes which show post titles with small image previews next to them are using thumbnails to show that image. The image is referred to as a thumbnail.
Thankfully, they’re easy to add (That’s why we do them this way!)
- Edit the post that you want to add a thumbnail too.
Click the “Set Thumbnail” link from the bottom of the right-hand column.- A window will load exactly like the one you use to add images to your posts. If you have already uploaded the image you want to use, click the “Gallery” tab and then click the “Show” button next to the image you want to use. Otherwise, just upload the new image as normal.
- Set the Title and Alternate Text if you wish.
- Click the “Use as thumbnail” link from beside the “Insert into Post” button. Now close the pop-up window and save your post, and you’re done!
